Across Borders: A Conversation on Decluttering and Living a Fuller Life

 初対面でしたが、私がどんな質問をしても、まず “That’s a good question.”

Today, I had the pleasure of having an online conversation with Michelle, who has worked in the decluttering and organizing field in the United States for many years.

Michelle began working in housekeeping while she was in college. She later gained experience in customer service and staff training at a Scandinavian furniture company, followed by coaching. Today, she works as a decluttering mindset coach, helping clients organize not only their homes, but also their thoughts and emotions.

What kind of life do they truly want to create?
What is standing in the way of that vision?

Through thoughtful coaching sessions, Michelle helps clients clarify their direction before handing the process over to professional organizers who support them with the physical work in their homes.

Although this was our first time meeting, whenever I asked Michelle a question, she would first say,

“That’s a good question.”

Her warm and accepting approach really stayed with me. I could easily imagine how her clients feel safe enough to trust her and openly share the challenges they have been carrying.

Many people struggle with feelings of self-doubt or isolation when they feel unable to manage the clutter in their homes.

In the U.S., homes can be much larger than those in Japan, and Michelle shared that in some cases, professional organizers visit once a month and work with a client for about a year to organize the entire home.

“What kind of life do I want to live in this home?”

I felt that the answer clients discover through their sessions with Michelle can become a compass that guides them through the long decluttering journey ahead.

We also talked about challenges such as what to do with the rooms and belongings of adult children who have left home, and how family members participate in the decluttering process.

Some challenges are shared by both Japan and the U.S., while others are shaped by differences in culture, family life, and the way our homes are designed. We could have talked for hours!

But what made me happiest was realizing how closely our goals align.

Through decluttering, we both hope to help people rediscover themselves, regain confidence, and create positive change in their lives.

We have each witnessed those moments in our own countries.

I hope this meeting is just the beginning of more opportunities to learn from one another and exchange ideas about organizing, culture, and everyday life across borders. 🌏

Thank you, Michelle, for such a wonderful and inspiring conversation!

And a heartfelt thank you to Barry for facilitating our conversation and helping with interpretation, while respecting both of our work and perspectives. Your support made this wonderful exchange possible. Thank you!
